Hair Transplant: Your Surgical Option to Hair Loss!

Dr Daood performs both Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) to patients from Sydney and Canberra, Australia.

FUT and FUE

There are two techniques that are practiced in hair transplant surgery. These are the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Hair transplant clinics may offer either of the two or both.

FUT is the traditional approach to hair transplant, and one that is also more invasive. In this procedure, a strip of scalp containing the donor hair is excised from the back of the head. This is also the reason why FUT is referred to as the “strip method.” Albeit being invasive and prone to scarring, this procedure still remains to be a reliable approach to hair transplantation. However, not everyone can be a good candidate for it.

What is good about this technique is that it has better yield and will result in high quality grafts because the removal of individual follicles is done under a microscope.

FUE, on the other hand, is a relatively newer procedure which is less invasive. It is created to answer the aesthetic concern present in FUT. This technique is more refined because it uses a special tool that creates a small circular incision around the hair follicle. Like a punch it removes the graft straight from the head. Instead of having to remove a piece of scalp. This is also the reason why it is sometimes referred to as the “punch graft” technique.

With FUE, the patient has a more attractive result because there is no need for any incisions, hence no linear scarring across the back of the head. However, the entire head would have to be shaved until hair is sized down into a stubble for easier removal. This will create a temporary aesthetic concern which will be corrected much faster than FUT.

The entire FUE procedure takes more time and skill to perform compared to FUT. And it is also a fact that it has a higher graft transection rate. But this can be lessened when you have it done by a hair surgeon who is trained and experienced in performing this technique.

Recipient Site

After the donor grafts are removed, the hair surgeon prepares the recipient site by creating tiny incisions on which the grafts will be implanted. The surgeon will ensure that the grafts will have proper distribution, angle and direction to create a natural-looking effect.

Pros

Hair transplant is a procedure that boasts of several benefits. One of which is that you get to have a natural regrowth of hair. It also allows a patient to restore a good hairline especially among those who only suffer from a slight regression. One of the major benefits of hair transplant is that it creates long-lasting results.

Generally, hair transplant is an outpatient procedure done under local anesthesia so the patient no longer needs to be confined. This also means that there will be lesser side effects.

This procedure can create natural-looking results. Hair transplant also has a high satisfaction rate among patients who had it done.

Cons

Just like any surgery, hair transplant also pose certain risks. One of these is the risk for bleeding, which is why the surgeon evaluates the patient prior to surgery to rule out bleeding tendencies. FUT in particular has a high risk for infection because of its invasive nature, but this can be avoided by proper surgical technique and aftercare.

Hair transplant is also not for everyone, so you need to have a realistic expectation when coming in for a consultation. It is also a fact that for some patients there will be more than one session based on the surgeon’s assessment. This would also imply that it will be more costly for some patients.

The techniques in hair transplant has evolved which make results look natural.
